Mountain Storm Wing Chun
About
Sifu David Harris began his martial arts journey at the age of 10, enrolling in a Shotokan Karate class at his school while also learning self-defense from his military father. After exploring several other martial arts, David's path changed when, at 19, he met Sifu Joe Boychuck of the Yip Man - Moy Yat lineage. For five years, David trained under Sifu Joe both publicly and privately.
In 1994, while studying at university, David started teaching Yip Man Hong Kong Wing Chun in Moncton, New Brunswick, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. His passion for Wing Chun and pre-cultural revolution China grew as he researched, discussed, and interacted with Wing Chun practitioners and masters worldwide, both in person and online.
Through years of teaching and training in Yip Man Wing Chun, David identified gaps and misinterpretations within the art. This realization led him to explore older families and lineages of Wing Chun. During this pivotal time, David reconnected with Sifu Zopa Gyatso (Yun Hoi), whom he found to be kind, knowledgeable, and deeply dedicated to understanding Wing Chun. Sifu Gyatso had extensive experience in Yip Man Wing Chun before becoming a student of the late Master Sum Nung and an indoor disciple of the Fung family.
Inspired by Sifu Gyatso’s teachings and writings, David embarked on an in-depth study of Yuen Kay San Wing Chun, seeking knowledge and exchanging ideas wherever possible. This exploration marked a transformative change in his understanding, performance, application, and theory of Wing Chun. Embracing the more detailed and complete teachings of the Yuen Kay San family, David now believes he is on the right path to mastering the art he cherishes.
David now shares his knowledge with a small, dedicated group of semi-private students, carefully selected for their character, kindness, and commitment to preserving this great self-defense art. He wishes to publicly thank Sifu Gyatso for his kindness, knowledge, and dedication to this incredible Chinese art form, and for welcoming him into his inner circle of internationally based students. It is an honor and privilege to walk this path under Sifu Gyatso's guidance.
“I do not train for Ego or Gold...I train, teach, discuss, exchange and contemplate Wing Chun because I dearly love this art, and I wish to preserve it from extinction.” ~Sifu David Harris
